Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) candidate Shelly Oberoi was elected as Delhi's new mayor after the ruling party won the mayoral polls on Wednesday.
A first-time member of the Delhi municipal body, Oberai won her civic election from East Patel Nagar area of Delhi last year in December.
What is Known About Shelly Oberoi?
39-year-old Shelly Oberoi holds a doctorate in management and is an alumnus of the elite Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode. She was a professor at the prestigious University of Delhi.
Having joined the AAP in 2013, she is now the first woman mayor of Delhi in more than a decade after BJP's Rajni Abbi last held the post in 2011.
Overcoming Political Hurdles
The decks for Oberoi's victory were cleared by the Supreme Court of India last week after it said that the nominated members cannot vote in the polls to elect a mayor.
In the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls held on December 8, the AAP ended Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 15-year control on the civic body, winning 134 seats to the latter's 104. However, after the AAP's triumph, Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) V.K. Saxena altered some rules, allowing members nominated by him, or aldermen, to vote in the mayoral polls.
The AAP challenged the LG's order in the apex court, which last week ruled in the Arvind Kejriwal-led party's favor, disallowing nominated members from voting in these elections.
Perhaps this is why the triumph of AAP candidate Oberoi, was a foregone conclusion.
