At least 35 were killed and 14 injured after Hindu devotees fell into a well at a temple on Thursday while offering prayers in Indore, a city in India's Madhya Pradesh state.
One person is reportedly missing, Indore Collector Illaiaraja T. said on Friday.
The incident took place on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Ram Navami.
The wall of the step well, estimated to be 12 meters deep, collapsed after devotees were standing on the slab, which got overloaded due to the increase in the number of people.
The official has stated that the stepwell is very old and filled with silt, mud, and other materials, cleaning it and removing seepage is challenging for the authority.
Indian Army and State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) are involved in rescue operations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "extremely pained by the mishap."
A magistral injury has been ordered in the matter by the state government.
