Tourists at Kochi Water Metro Terminal in the southern Indian state of Kerala were greeted in a rather unusual way by scores of sardine fish flying and taking giant leaps on the seacoast.
A video of the incident has hit the internet and gone viral, prompting varying reactions from netizens.
In the video, people standing on the coast can be seen overjoyed as they bend down on their knees to grab some fish and take videos and photos with them.
While the exact cause of scores of fish leaping out of water remains unknown, a study done by Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) terms the event as a “sardine run”.
According to the reports, a sardine run is actually the migration of sardine fish as the waters change temperature.
Kochi Water Metro Terminal, recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is a first-of-its-kind public boat service integrated with the metro rail network.
