Manipur has been subjected to further violence on Saturday following ugly scenes last week as part of tribal tensions in the region.
Mobs have reportedly formed and acts of vandalism and arson were reported on Friday night, while intermittent bursts of fire were being reported until early Saturday morning, media quoting police and army sources reported.
The sources further said that automatic weapons were fired in Kwatha and Kangvai areas of the state.
According to media reports, a mob of around 1,000 people attempted to burn the Palace Compound near Advance Hospital. The Rapid Action Force (RAF) fired tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring two civilians.
Apart from this, around 200 to 300 people gathered near Thongju at around 10.40 pm (IST) and attempted to vandalise the house of a local lawmaker. A mob was also reported near Manipur University.
In another incident, a group of 300 to 400 tried to ransack and vandalise the armoury of Iringbam Police Station in the Imphal West district. However, it was dispersed by the RAF.
Sources further informed the media that 200 to 300 people surrounded the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office a little after midnight at Sinjemai, but an army column dispersed the crowd.
An attempt to vandalise the residence of BJP regional leader Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi in Imphal West was also made but the army and RAF foiled the attempt.
The joint forces of the army, Assam Rifles, Rapid Action Force and state police undertook a Flag March in Imphal East district to dispel further violence.
The violence in Manipur began in early May after clashes broke out between two tribal communities. The state and federal governments have been working to offer a peace plan.
