Manipur has been witnessing deadly clashes between two tribal communities since May. So far, 115 people have died and more than 40,000 others have been displaced because of the violence.
Nine people, including a woman, were killed and 10 others injured in the Khamenlok area of India's northeastern state of Manipur after fresh violence broke out, the media has revealed.
Most of the
victims in the incident reportedly sustained either bullet or knife wounds.
According to preliminary reports, the deadly violence erupted after various incidents of arson were discovered in Khamenlok over the past 36 hours.
"There was firing in the village [of Agijang - on the border of the districts of Imphal East and Kangpokpi]. All the injured have been admitted to hospital where the condition of one is said to be critical," said Imphal East Police Superintendent Ksh Shivakanta Singh.
He added that the situation in the area is now under control.
Violence erupted on Monday in the Kangpokpi area of the districts of Imphal East and Churachandpur. One person died, and nine others were injured in separate incidents.
Communal clashes erupted in the tribal state in early May between the tribal Kukis, who mostly live in the hill districts, and the Meiteis, the dominant community in Imphal Valley, after a court order awarded Schedule Tribe (ST) status for Meiteis in the state.
Kukis fear that if ST status is
granted to the Meiteis, they will take the lion's share of all benefits offered to minorities in the state, including in education and the workplace.
Since May, a curfew has been imposed in 11 of the 16 districts and Internet services are suspended. More than 10,000 army personnel have been deployed in the area.
