Beijing Confirms Xi Jinping's Participation in SCO Summit

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is the world's largest regional grouping, covering 40 percent of the Earth's population and nearly 60 percent area of Europe and Asia.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit whitch set to be hosted virtually by India next week, the country's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday.

In an official statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying noticed that at the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping "will attend via video conference in Beijing the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and deliver important remarks on July 4".

This is the first time an official announcement regarding XI's attendance at the SCO summit organized by India has been made by Beijing.

Formed in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, the SCO has emerged as an influential regional organization both in terms of economics and security, especially in the Eurasian region.

Speaking about India, the South Asian nation became an SCO member alongside neighboring Pakistan in 2017.

This year, India is presiding over the chair of the regional bloc whose presidency changes among members every year.

To highlight the importance of SCO in Indian foreign relations, the country opened a panoramic "New Delhi Hall" at the organization's Secretariat in Beijing on Tuesday.
