As Tomato Prices Soar, Ex-State Chief Supporters Cut Tomato Cake on His Birthday

This week, the price of tomatoes has skyrocketed in parts of the country due to a delay in monsoon rains. The highest price was INR 122 ($1.49) per kilogram, reported from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Bellary (Karnataka).

An Uttar Pradesh state Samajwadi Party (SP) worker celebrated chief Akhilesh Yadav's birthday by cutting a tomato cake and distributing tomatoes among people to highlight the surging price of the crop.
In a video clip shared by the Indian news agency PTI, party workers cut a tomato-shaped cake and distributed sweet boxes filled with tomatoes.
Tomato prices in the country have doubled in a week. Monsoon rains have affected crop transportation from one region to another, with many goods rotting during extreme weather.
Former Uttar Pradesh state chief Yadav, a four-time parliamentarian, turned 50 on Saturday. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, and many prominent leaders greeted him on his birthday.
Meanwhile, the union government said tomato prices would soon decrease on the market.
