Doctors at the SN Children’s Hospital in Prayagraj, in India's Uttar Pradesh, have conducted a complex operation on a seven-month-old boy, who was found to be carrying a fetus of equal age inside his stomach.
Dr. D Kumar, who performed the surgery, revealed that five days ago, a farmer from the town of Kunda in Pratapgarh brought his seven-month-old son to the hospital due to severe abdominal swelling.
During the primary medical examination, a CT scan was performed which showed that the infant was carrying another baby in his stomach, a case of fetus in fetu (FIF), a rare congenital anomaly.
The boy was immediately hospitalized, and surgery was performed.
The mother of the seven-month-old boy had died after giving birth. The fetus remained inside the boy and with time, it developed a head, hair, and both arms and legs.
Calling it a very rare case, the medical experts said that there were probably 200 such cases in the whole world and 10 in the country.
The doctors informed the media that the child is now healthy and under medical supervision.
