The Tirupathur district in India's Tamil Nadu state has set its sights on creating a new world record for digging the greatest number of farm ponds -- 1,556 -- in just 30 days.
To boost the district's groundwater level, a dedicated team of workers from the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has diligently excavated 1,556 ponds.
During the monsoon season, these ponds will transform into reservoirs, providing a valuable water storage solution for farmers during the summer months.
Furthermore, this initiative will incentivize farmers to engage in profitable fish farming, significantly boosting the income of rural communities.
Each pond, which has been built with a budget of INR 200,000 ($2,430), can hold 200,000 litres of rainwater.
US-based Elite World Records, UAE-based Asian Records Academy, Indian Records Academy, and Thamizhan Book of Records teams will be visiting the district to inspect the farm ponds and declare the world record.
