”Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
During his inaugural speech, PM Modi, who is hosting the G20 in New Delhi today, expressed deep sympathy and 'sincere condolences' to all those affected by the tragic earthquake in Morocco.
Videos from Historic Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, shared on social media show how buildings and artworks of the famous red walls surrounding the old city were reduced to rubble and dust. Marrakech is the nearest big city to the epicentre.
The Morocco's Interior Ministry said that the tremor had hit the provinces of Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, Marrakech, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudan.
The Friday earthquake is considered to be the strongest the region has seen in nineteen years.
In 2004, the Al Hoceima region was shaken by a powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale. Tragically, this disaster claimed the lives of a minimum of 628 people, while 926 others were left injured.
