"The Indian Air Force recently signed a contract with an Indian manufacturer for the procurement of Automatic Weather Stations at 82 IAF locations," the IAF stated.

"This technology enhancement will provide a significant boost to aviation safety by providing real-time weather updates during flight operations and training," it read.

IAF's Recent Record of Aircraft Crashes

Over the years, the IAF has faced the challenge of dealing with aircraft crashes, largely due to its aging fleet of combat fighter jets.
Last year, a parliamentary committee raised tough questions about the rising number of aircraft accidents in the IAF.
From 2007 to 2017, there were an average of eight aircraft crashes per year, followed by six.

"In the last financial year (2020-21), the accident rate was the lowest in the last 50 years," said the report, which was shared with the Parliamentary Defence Committee.

Against this background, the automatic weather stations are expected to further reduce the accident rate in the IAF.
