Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a stalwart hero of the country's freedom struggle.

A rare combination of high learning and deep intellect, Azad was a one of the builders of the modern Indian state.
He also served as the first Education Minister of Independent India from 1947 to 1958.
