Regarding global textile exports, Bangladesh's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Not only did it reclaim its second position as an apparel exporter in 2021, with earnings reaching an impressive $35.81 billion, but it also managed to maintain this position in 2022. This success has allowed Bangladesh to expand its market share to an impressive 7.9%.
However, amidst Bangladesh's triumphs, a poignant narrative unfolds within the country’s borders. Recent protests over wages led to the closure of hundreds of garment factories, shedding light on the harsh realities faced by workers.
Approximately 150 factories have been forced to shut down, greatly affecting a workforce that accounts for a substantial 85% of the country's annual exports. This includes renowned global brands such as Levi's, Zara, and H&M. Bangladeshi workers have strongly voiced their demand for higher wages and have firmly rejected the government's proposed increase of 56.25%.
Bangladesh's commitment to retaining its position as the world's second-largest apparel exporter is a testament to its strategic maneuvers. Notably, the country attributes its growth to a shift towards value-added products and a strategic relocation of orders from China.
