With an aim to give a modern twist to fashion and show Muslim women taking the lead in it, students of Shri Ram College in India's Uttar Pradesh state's Muzaffarnagar city walked the ramp wearing hijabs and abayas.
However, this didn't go down well with a section of the internet that mistakenly considered hijabs and abayas as burqa and criticized the students for disrespecting the outfit.
Expressing a powerful opposition to the show, the Muslim organization 'Jamiat-e-Ulema' has issued a statement denouncing the inclusion of the Burqa as a fashion statement.
"Burqa was not a part of fashion, it is used for curtain, and college students should not do this in the future," the statement reads.
The video of the incident has left the internet divided.
While some criticized the women for treating the burqa as a mere fashion statement, others corrected that it's hijabs and abayas and not burqa, and also applauded women for embracing their potential.

"None of those Muslims in the picture are in a Burqa. They are in Head Hijabs and Abayas. Burkha covers the face," one user commented.

Another user replied, "I appreciate, whoever did this, it was amazing, Burqa should be part of fashion. Fashion is related to the clothes, not the body and this will promote a good fashion sense in Muslim girls."
