It is not the first time that India is witnessing a row over wearing a Muslim garment. Earlier this month, a similar incident occurred in Jammu&Kashmir's capital, when several girls wearing abayas (similar to burqas) were asked to remove them before entering a school.
A few girls appearing for the Urdu medium degree examination at KV Ranga Reddy College in Santosh Nagar in Hyderabad city in Telangana were asked to remove their burqas before taking the examination.
According to media reports, the girls claimed that the college staff asked them to remove their burqas and because of this confusion, they were prevented from appearing in the examination for about half an hour.
Following the incident, parents of some of the girl students complained to state’s Home Minister Mahmood Ali regarding the issue.
Ali condemned the incident and assured that action will be taken against those who are responsible for the delay. He, however, cautioned women from wearing short dresses.

While talking to the media, he said: “some headmaster or principal might be doing this but our policy is totally secular. People can wear whatever they want. Nowhere it is written that a burqa can't be worn. We will take action.”
Cautioning women over wearing short dresses, he said: “If you wear a European dress, it will not be correct. We should wear good clothes, especially women. If women wear less or inappropriate clothes then it might be a problem therefore it is better for them to dress in a modest way."
