As heavy rains continue in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the situation and relief initiatives.
At least four districts in the state have been inundated, including Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi, where people are being shifted to relief camps.
Thoothukudi recorded 95 cm of rainfall on Monday, while Tirunelveli district has received 135% more rainfall than normal since October.
Meanwhile, around 800 passengers were stranded at the Srivaikuntam railway station in Tuticorin after heavy rains damaged the track, causing flooding. The Indian Army and Air Force have joined the rescue operation to help the affected areas.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has started air-dropping relief material for stranded train passengers and the IAF helicopters will airlift unwell passengers. The Indian Army rescued has rescued about 118 flood-affected people.
Satellite imagery on Monday confirmed the presence of a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin region and heavy cloud cover over southern Kerala and Tamil Nadu. As a result, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the state would receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
