A bizarre theft in Bihar's Darbhanga district has left locals perplexed, as an entire pond was “stolen”.
According to media reports, land mafias acquired the pond, which was earlier publicly owned, and replaced it with a hut.
Locals informed the cops about the hut that had surprisingly appeared in place of the pond. They even alleged that the mafias had had their eyes on the pond, as the price of land has been soaring in the district.

The residents also told the police that the pond had been maintained for fishing and other activities.
Locals earlier also informed the authorities about the pond being filled with soil, and after the intervention of zonal officials, the work was stopped during the day, but was still carried out during the night.
“People say the pond was filled with soil within 10-15 days. The work was done only at night. Officials had visited the spot earlier and even seized some items”, Amit Kumar, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), told media.
This is not the first time that a bizarre incident of theft has been reported in Bihar. In November 2022, an entire train diesel engine was stolen in Begusarai. The thieves had dug a tunnel to the yard and stole the engine part by part.
In 2022, an entire 60-foot bridge was stolen in the Rohtas district. The police arrested eight people, including a government officer in connection with the matter. Law enforcement also recovered 247 kg of iron channels from the accused.
