Pakistan's caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has constituted a seven-member committee to ensure the smooth conduct of the upcoming February 8 general elections, including overseeing security arrangements.
According to reports, interim Minister for Communications, Railways, and Maritime Affairs Shahid Ashraf Tarar has been appointed as the head of the committee, which includes the interior secretary and four provincial chiefs.
The committee will reportedly review and resolve matters concerning administrative arrangements and coordinate with various other agencies involved for the smooth conduct of the elections.
It has also been empowered to issue directions for urgent requirements of additional security where law and order situations so require, the reports said, adding that the committee can implement directions of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the smooth and orderly conduct of polls.
