The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party in the Maldives, has reportedly collected enough signatures to submit a motion to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu, Maldivian media reported Monday.
According to an MDP lawmaker, the party, in cooperation with the Democrats, successfully collected the necessary signatures for the impeachment motion.
According to media reports, a total of 34 members, including representatives of the MDP and the Democrats, have expressed their support for the impeachment motion against the President. This development follows yesterday's disruption of the Maldivian Parliament.
In addition, the media revealed that the MDP has taken a stance to withhold approval for Home Minister Ali Ihusan and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon if government lawmakers continue to disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
In response to a recent altercation between political leaders in the Maldivian Parliament, heightened security measures have been implemented for today's session.
The Maldivian Parliament was rocked on Sunday when members of the ruling PPM/PNC party disrupted parliamentary proceedings and clashed with the Speaker. A crucial vote on the parliamentary approval of the Muizzu government was originally scheduled for Sunday.
