The Maldives opposition leader from the Jumhooree Party (JP), Qasim Ibrahim, has called for a formal apology from President Mohammed Muizzu to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for his controversial remarks that sparked widespread outrage.
As per a report by the Maldivian digital news outlet, Ibrahim stressed the crucial need to uphold diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries and underscored the state's obligation.
He referred to President Solih's Presidential Decree, which prohibited the 'India Out' movement, and warned against revoking it, as it would be harmful to the country.
President Solih strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made by certain junior ministers, resulting in a tense diplomatic standoff.
