Tensions between India and the Maldives intensified after several ministers from the Maldivian government publicly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lakshadweep this month.
The Maldives opposition leader from the Jumhooree Party (JP), Qasim Ibrahim, has called for a formal apology from President Mohammed Muizzu to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for his controversial remarks that sparked widespread outrage.
As per a report by the Maldivian digital news outlet, Ibrahim stressed the crucial need to uphold diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries and underscored the state's obligation.
He referred to President Solih's Presidential Decree, which prohibited the 'India Out' movement, and warned against revoking it, as it would be harmful to the country.

The ‘India Out’ campaign, led by former President Abdulla Yameen, was responsible for spreading an unverified accusation that Indian military officers in the Maldives violated the country’s sovereignty.

President Solih strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made by certain junior ministers, resulting in a tense diplomatic standoff.
PM Modi's visit to Lakshadweep Union Territory of India in January was severely criticized by Male deputy ministers and government officials who accused him of targeting and competing with them in creating beach tourism.
This triggered #BoycottMaldives trend on social media by Indian citizens and celebrities.
After his return from the China trip, Muizzu officially requested India to withdraw its military personnel from the Maldives by March 15. According to the media reports, 88 Indian military personnel have been stationed in the Maldives to help operate helicopters provided by India.
