Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry will participate in a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod from June 10-11, the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
"On an invitation extended by the Foreign Minister of Russia, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry is scheduled to leave for Russia to attend the BRICS Ministerial Session which will be held in Nizhniy Novgorod in Russia on 11 June 2024. The Foreign Minister has been invited for the Ministerial Meeting as the current Chair of the IORA Council of Ministers," the ministry said in a statement.
Sabry is scheduled to deliver a speech on the "role of BRICS and Global South in reforming global governance, ensuring sustainable development, enhancing global security," and hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from a number of countries, according to the statement.
Russia assumed the rotating presidency of the group of the world's largest emerging economies on January 1. Until recently, the organization consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It admitted four new full members in January: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
