"Astra is currently in production, and we anticipate receiving additional orders. We are also working on exporting the Astra missile, which was designed and developed by DRDO," Vinod Kumar, General Manager, New Projects, Bharat Dynamics Ltd told Sputnik India.
The Astra missile has been successfully developed, integrated into the Sukhoi-30, and rigorously tested. It is now operational, with Bharat Dynamics Ltd. recently receiving an order for an additional 200 missiles this month.
In discussing the Indian Air Force's first indigenously developed beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile – the Astra – the General Manager highlighted that this particular seeker version has demonstrated its effectiveness during user trials. It has received commendations for its performance and is more cost-effective than comparable imported missiles.
Accuracy and lethality are critical in any weapon or missile, and "this missile has proven itself both during trials to the satisfaction of the armed forces, with an accuracy rate over 90% and a range of about 100-200 km," Kumar added.
The company executive mentioned that currently, the Astra Mark 2 is under development as an enhancement to the existing Astra 1 missile.
"There is always room for improvement, including increases in range, operational capabilities, and safety features, as well as any other potential upgrades," Kumar pointed out.
The Astra 1 is currently integrated into the Sukhoi-30 and is poised for broader deployment, including incorporation into the Tejas, India’s next-generation advanced fighter aircraft.
Meanwhile, the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas will be equipped with an air-to-air missile capable of engaging targets at distances exceeding 100 kilometers.
