Did Hunter Biden Play a Role in Bangladesh Unrest?

Blue Star Strategies, a lobbying and consultancy firm backed by Hunter Biden, was reportedly hired on behalf of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 2018-19 to "educate" US and European officials about free and fair elections in the country.

The alleged role of US President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden in trying to influence the American policy towards the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has come into sharp focus following the student protestors-led coup in Dhaka on 5 August.

Last November, the US Senate Committee on Judiciary and Committee on Oversight and Accountability had stated in a letter to Blue Star that, back in 2015, Hunter had been "instrumental in convincing Burisma to retain Blue Star’s services". The conflict of interest allegations against Joe Biden (who was Vice President under Barack Obama at the time) arising from Hunter's dealings with a Ukrainian firm have been a subject of scrutiny by the US Justice Department and Congressional members.

According to filings with the US Department of Justice previously reported in media, the services of Blue Star were contracted by a British individual Abdul Sattar on behalf of BNP in 2018. Over $278,000 were paid by Sattar to Blue Star to implement a public awareness campaign in favour of BNP and educate American, European officials as well as media and policy influencers about the importance of a "free and fair election" in the US.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury, a counter-terrorism expert from Bangladesh and the editor of Blitz publication, told Sputnik India that the narrative of a "free and fair election" underpinned the Biden administration's outlook towards Hasina soon after the Democrats came back to power in 2021.

"The [supposed] involvement of a firm linked to Hunter Biden in backing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) appears to be the most credible proof pointing to Biden family direct stakes in trying to perpetrate a regime change in Bangladesh. These charges against Hunter Biden have been reported in our media, but neither Hunter nor Blue Star Strategies have come clean on them till date," commented Choudhury.

A Bangladeshi Awami League politician told Sputnik India that most of what's known about Hunter's dealings concerns his activities in China, Ukraine, and Romania.

"As of now, there are no substantial mainstream sources that directly confirm significant involvement in Bangladesh’s political scene. Most of the controversies surrounding Biden involve his work with foreign corporations rather than political parties, like the BNP," said Sushanta Das Gupta, an Awami League sub-committee member.

Meanwhile, allegations against former US Deputy Ambassador in Bangladesh Jon Danilowicz in blackmailing the Hasina-led government into dropping a corruption probe against Mohammad Yunus, have also come under a scanner.
In 2017, Senate Committee on Judiciary wrote to then Secretary of State Rex Tillerson highlighting that Hillary Clinton (when she served as the Secretary of State in 2011) pressured Sheikh Hasina to terminate a corruption investigation into a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) donor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The Committee also pointed out that State Department officials had threatened the Prime Minister’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, with an IRS audit if he did not attempt to get his mother to terminate the investigation.
The threat to Wazed was delivered by Jon Danilowicz, a former US Deputy Ambassador in Dhaka.

Choudhury questioned the lack of condemnation from the American side regarding the instances of violence against minorities following Hasina's ouster. "If the human rights situation under Hasina was a concern [for them], why is the US silent on attacks against minorities now? It seems to indicate that the they had a vested interest in toppling Hasina," Choudhury suggested.
