The US Attorney, Breon Peace, who recently indicted the Adani Group for alleged fraud and bribery, has announced his resignation effective January 10, 2025, just days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
The timing of Peace's resignation, shortly before a change in administration, has sparked speculation about potential connections between Peace, Chuck Schumer, and billionaire George Soros.
Soros, who has been critical of Narendra Modi's government and Gautam Adani, has been a significant donor to Schumer’s political action committee (PAC), raising questions about the influence of these relationships on Peace’s legal actions, particularly regarding the Adani case.
The Adani Group strongly denied the accusations, asserting that there was no evidence of bribery involved. The group also criticised the US government's actions, stating the indictment led to financial losses and tarnished its reputation internationally.
Apart from Adani bribery case, Peace has handled several other high-profile cases, including the conviction of US Congressman George Santos and the sex trafficking trial of singer R. Kelly.
According to the official statement, Carolyn Pokorny, the current First Assistant US Attorney, will take over as acting US Attorney upon Peace's departure.
