Putin Sends Condolences to Indian Leadership Over Former PM Manmohan Singh's Death

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed condolences to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection with the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Kremlin said on Friday.

Singh passed away last night in New Delhi at the age of 92.

"Manmohan Singh was an outstanding statesman. As head of government and in other senior positions, he has done a lot for the economic development of India and the promotion of its interests on the world stage. He also made a great personal contribution to the strengthening of friendly relations between our countries, bringing them to the level of a particularly privileged strategic partnership," Putin's telegram read.

Putin noted that he had the opportunity to communicate with this wonderful man many times.
"We will keep the brightest memory of him. I ask you to convey my sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the deceased, as well as to the entire people of India," the message read.
Manmohan Singh, who served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, passed away last night in New Delhi at the age of 92.
During his tenure, Singh gave special attention to bilateral India-Russia relations, visiting Russia nine times.
In 2013, Singh was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
