Russia Tops List of Crude Suppliers to India, US Out of Top 5

Russia has been India's number one oil supplier for over two years — after Western nations rejected Moscow's energy exports and slapped sanctions on the Eurasian state.

Russia emerged as the top oil exporter to India in December 2024 while the US exited the top 5, data from energy cargo tracking firm Vortexa shows.

Russian oil exports to India have hit 31 percent of the South Asian country's crude basket.
By contrast, US oil accounted for only one percent of supplies to India, with Angola knocking it off the number five spot.

The figures represent a dramatic slump in US oil exports to India, which stood at percent percent in August 2024.

"In December 2024, the top five supplies included Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Angola, with Angola overtaking the United States as the fifth largest crude supplier," Vortexa analyst Xavier Tang said. "India's crude imports grew 2 percent year over year, summing to 4.57mbd in 2024."

India has continuously rebuffed Western pressure to halt oil imports from Russia.

The world's largest democracy is now the second largest importer of crude from Russia after fellow Asian giant China, with both nations consistently purchasing at least 30 percent of all Russian oil exports.
