In a major boost to the Indian Army's artillery units, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday announced the signing of multiple agreements worth $1.15 billion for the acquisition of "Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 (DPICM) and High Explosive Pre Fragmented (HEPF) Mk-1 (Enhanced) rockets" that form the bedrock of the Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS).
"ADM Type-1 of PINAKA MLRS has a specialised warhead to deliver a quantum of sub-munitions over a larger area targeting mechanised forces, vehicles and personnel, thereby denying specific areas to the enemy. HEPF Mk-1 (E) rockets are advanced versions of in service HEPF rockets which have enhanced range to strike deep into enemy territory with precision and lethality," the MoD said in a statement.
The induction of ADM Type-1 (DPICM) and HEPF Mk-1 (E) rockets will bolster the modernisation drive of Artillery Rocket Regiments of the powerhouse's ground forces.
Furthermore, these advanced weapon systems will prove to be vital in enhancing the Indian Army's firepower as these military platforms will allow troops to carry out precise and long-range strikes.
The Pinaka MLRS was first inducted into the Indian Army in 2000 and has also been exported to Armenia.
