The conflict was reportedly triggered by the Taliban’s attempt to set up a security post on the other side of the Durand Line – a border demarcated by British authorities in the late 19th century. This move at one of the busiest crossing points between Kabul, Jalalabad and Peshawar prompted retaliation from the Pakistani side, leading to armed combat with light and headvy weaponry.
No casualties or damage have been reported, the news agency reported.
The Torkham checkpoint gates have remained closed from the Pakistani side for nearly two weeks, preventing trucks carrying goods between the two countries from passing through. Afghanistan’s interior ministry said that several hundred trucks were stranded at the border, bringing cross-border and transit trade to a near standstill.
Pakistani authorities cited the Taliban’s establishment of a security post near the checkpoint gates as the reason for halting truck movement and passport processing for travelers. Meanwhile, the Afghan Interior Ministry has raised concerns about Pakistan shutting down the crossing.
