Modi shared the details of the discussion via his social media account, urging both nations and the international community to prioritize diplomacy.
"Spoke with President of Iran @drpezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability," PM Modi wrote on X.
The call for de-escalation follows the United States' airstrikes on three nuclear sites in Iran—Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan—on the night of Sunday, June 20. The strikes were carried out under the direction of President Donald Trump, who stated that the objective was to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He further warned that Tehran must agree to "end this war" or face even more severe consequences.
In response, Iran has called for an emergency session of both the IAEA Board of Governors and the UN Security Council.
