Russia Hopes Ceasefire Between Iran, Israel Will Stop Military Escalation

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Moscow hopes that military escalation in the Middle East will be stopped after the ceasefire between Iran and Israel, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday.
Sputnik
"There is hope that the flywheel of the most dangerous military escalation, which was launched on June 13 this year by Israel's aggressive, illegal actions against Iran, joined by the United States on June 22, will be stopped," Zakharova told a briefing.
Today it is important to preserve and consolidate "the fragile truce in order to return the situation to a negotiating track as soon as possible," the spokeswoman said, adding that diplomacy is the only way to settle the issue of Iran's nuclear program and resolve the crisis in the region.
"Bombing of nuclear facilities should not be allowed to become literally commonplace. It is necessary to give an objective assessment of what happened so that this never happens again," Zakharova said.
The responsibility for damaging the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is on Israel and the United States, whose actions violated the UN Charter and Security Council resolutions, she added.
"The fact that Iran's nuclear facilities, which are under the control of the IAEA, have become a target for American and Israeli missiles is an open challenge to the NPT [Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty] system. There are real obstacles to the implementation of the comprehensive safeguards agreement concluded between the agency and Iran. The credibility of the agency's global verification system, which was used as a source of information for bombing planning, is in question," the spokeswoman also said.
At the same time, Russia's settlement proposal remains "on the table," she stated.
"We are not imposing anything on anyone, we are only talking about how we see a possible way out of the situation, which would involve, on the one hand, ensuring Iran's legitimate right to develop a peaceful atom, and, on the other, would take into account Israel's security interests. We believe that it is realistic to find such a solution," Zakharova added.
