India will be among global leaders in semiconductor manufacturing by 2032, Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday.
"In case of semiconductors, by 2031–2032—in that timeframe we will be equivalent to what many of these countries are at today. Then it'll be a race which will be very fair and a level playing field", Vaishnaw said during the New Economy Forum in Singapore.
It is worth remembering that microchips and semiconductors are vital for a range of industries, including consumer goods such as washing machines, dishwashers, and mobile phones, as well as missiles and aviation platforms in the defence sector, among others.
India has set up a dedicated $10 billion fund to boost its semiconductor industry, resulting in Micron Technology Inc. establishing a plant in Gujarat, while homegrown salts-to-steel conglomerate Tata Group is in the process of starting a chip manufacturing unit in a joint venture with Taiwan’s PSMC.
