Rajnath Singh Inaugurates 125 Border Infrastructure Projects in Ladakh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday inaugurated 125 new border infrastructure projects from Ladakh, marking the largest simultaneous launch in the history of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). Valued at over $600 million, the projects represent the BRO’s highest-value rollout to date.

The developments include 28 roads, 93 bridges, and four additional projects across Ladakh, Jammu & Kashmir, and seven states — Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Mizoram.
A key highlight was the unveiling of the 920-metre Shyok Tunnel on the Darbuk–Shyok–Daulat Beg Oldie road. Built in extremely challenging terrain, the tunnel will provide all-weather, reliable access to one of India’s most critical frontier zones, often disrupted by avalanches, landslides, and severe winter conditions. Singh called it an engineering milestone that boosts India’s mobility and rapid-deployment capability in high-altitude regions.
Singh said the new projects reflect the government's commitment to strengthening border infrastructure under the Viksit Bharat vision. Enhanced connectivity, he noted, is essential not only for national security, but also for economic activity, tourism, and disaster response.
He praised the BRO for completing complex projects with “speed, efficiency, and indigenous solutions,” adding that the organisation has become a symbol of national connectivity. Singh also pointed to India’s continued economic strength, with GDP growth hitting 8.2% in the second quarter of 2025–26.
The Defence Minister highlighted the BRO’s humanitarian missions this year — including rescuing 46 workers during the Mana avalanche in Uttarakhand, evacuating over 1,600 stranded tourists in North Sikkim, and assisting nearly 5,000 pilgrims after a cloudburst in Jammu & Kashmir.
The BRO recorded about $2 billion in expenditure during 2024–25, with a target of around $2.25 billion for 2025–26. Director General Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan credited government support and progressive policies for enabling the organisation to operate effectively in some of India’s most challenging terrains.
Singh also virtually inaugurated the Galwan War Memorial in Ladakh, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of India’s armed forces. Senior military leaders, governors, lieutenant governors, and chief ministers attended the event.
Over the past two years, 356 BRO projects have been dedicated to the nation. The government has also increased the BRO’s budget to about $860 million in the 2025–26 Union Budget, underscoring its strategic significance.
