Maritime Traffic in Hormuz Tops 40 Vessels Amid Trump's Project Freedom: Data

More than 40 cargo ships and oil tankers are currently transiting the Strait of Hormuz after US President Donald Trump announced an operation dubbed Project Freedom, under which the US intends to help blocked ships leave the strait, Sputnik found out on Monday based on maritime traffic tracking data.

According to the tracking data, as of 7:30 GMT, 10 oil tankers and 34 cargo ships were moving in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, another 19 tankers and 36 cargo ships remained stationary in the strait.
There are no US military ships currently visible in the Strait of Hormuz, or they are there with their transponders turned off, data showed.
On Sunday evening, Trump announced Operation Project Freedom to assist ships blocked in the Strait of Hormuz and seeking to leave it, which concerns ships from countries not involved in the conflict between Washington and Tehran.
The US leader called the initiative humanitarian, stating that sailors aboard the blocked ships are facing food shortages and other problems. He also said that after leaving the strait, these ships will not return there until a final resolution of the conflict between the US and Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Sunday that military support for the operation in the Strait of Hormuz area will include destroyers, aircraft, and 15,000 service members. However, as the Axios news agency reported, the operation does not require US Navy ships to escort commercial vessels.
