The White House official acknowledged a lot of challenges in the bilateral relationship despite the rapid progress achieved in the last two decades.The statement came amid New Delhi's persistent rejection of the US request that it curb military and energy ties with Russia in response to Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine. The Indian government has categorically stated that it will prioritize its national interests during a time of global food and energy crises.New Delhi had also shown inhibition in joining the Quad — a grouping of the US, Japan, and Australia, at the leaders’ level last year, Campbell revealed.Campbell, however, asserted that India and the US should work around areas such as technology and climate change, among others, to further build ties. In recent months, New Delhi and Washington differed on several issues, including a price cap on Russian oil and the resumption of US military support to Pakistan. Since the beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine in February, New Delhi has consistently rejected calls by the US and other Western allies to scale down its military and political ties with Moscow. The Western powers have also sought to pressure New Delhi to vote against Russia on various Ukraine-related resolutions at the United Nations, a call India has ignored.

Prioritizing its decades-old ties with Russia and its national interests, New Delhi declined to follow the US approach against Kremlin over the Ukrainian crisis.
India will not be an ally of the US but will be another great power, Kurt Campbell, the White House Asia coordinator, said on Thursday.
The White House official acknowledged a lot of challenges in the bilateral relationship despite the rapid progress achieved in the last two decades.
"India has a unique strategic character. It will not be an ally of the United States. It has a desire to be an independent, powerful state and it will be another great power," Campbell said at the Aspen Security Forum meeting in Washington.
The statement came amid New Delhi's persistent rejection of the US request that it curb military and energy ties with Russia in response to Moscow’s
special military operation in Ukraine. The Indian government has categorically stated that it will prioritize its national interests during a time of global food and energy crises.
New Delhi had also shown inhibition in joining the Quad — a grouping of the US, Japan, and Australia, at the leaders’ level last year, Campbell revealed.
“There were probably voices in their bureaucracy that were against it. But when President Biden made the direct appeal repeatedly to Prime Minister Modi, they decided that this was in their interests,” he said.
