Raja Pateria is a senior Congress politician and served as minister in the Madhya Pradesh state government in 1998-2003.
Former Madhya Pradesh minister Raja Pateria, from India's main opposition party Congress, sparked controversy after going viral on Monday.
In a video, Pateria was reportedly heard asking people to be ready to "kill" Modi to "save the Constitution" of the country. Soon after the footage surfaced on social media, it alarmed federally governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politicians, who took to social media to express concern.

BJP in-charge of the IT cell Amit Malviya shared the video, saying that “Congress is desperately planning to assassinate PM Modi.”

BJP Member of Parliament V.D. Sharma stated in a tweet in Hindi: “Ex-Minister Raja Pateria instigating the public and Congress workers to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an extremely serious and condemnable act.”
Taking a jibe at former Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” ("Unite India Campaign"), Sharma suggested that an investigation should be conducted into whether any such conspiracy was hatched during what he sarcastically referred to as Rahul Ghandi's “Bharat Todo Yatra” ("Disintegrate India Campaign") in Madhya Pradesh.
Condemning the statement of Pateria, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla in a tweet slammed Congress and sought to know from the opposition party if "will they act on him.”
Meanwhile, senior BJP politician and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra ordered that a first information report (FIR) be filed with the police in Panna city.
While talking to the media, Mishra said: “Such statements show that today's Congress is not Mahatma Gandhi's Congress. It's the Congress of Italy that is afflicted with a Mussolini mindset.”
Condemning the statement by Congress politician, Madhya Pradesh state chief Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the comments exposed Congress' “real sentiment.”
“The respected PM Modi lives in the hearts of the people, he is the centre of the admiration and faith of the entire country. Congress people can't face the PM in the electoral battle, and one Congress leader talks about his murder. This is the height of jealousy. This is excess hatred. Congress's real sentiments have been revealed, but such things won't be tolerated. An FIR is being registered, and the law will take its course,” he said.
After the scandal broke out, Pateria now claims his comments were misinterpreted.
"I am a man who believes in Gandhi, I cannot talk like this. I meant the political environment where it is necessary to defeat Modi to save the Constitution. It is necessary to defeat Modi to protect minorities, Dalits, tribals and to remove unemployment. My intention regarding the 'assassination of Modi' has been completely misrepresented," he clarified.
"You should be ready to kill Modi... kill in the sense of defeating him," he clarified.
