As the leader of the world's fifth-largest economy, the Indian PM seeks to stand up for the country's national interests while nurturing positive relations with other countries, especially the Global South.
What Modi says usually draws great national attention and quite often makes headlines all over the world.
Check out our list of the PM’s top quotes on issues from the development of India in the future, international relations, to the deepening of ties with other counties this year.

On India's Future Growth

India celebrated Independence Day on August 15. Addressing the public, the PM spurred the youth to make India a developed country by 2047:

“The youth of my country, when India will celebrate 100 years of Independence, you would have turned 50-55. It means that this golden period of your life is the time to take an oath to make India a developed country by 100 years of Independence."

In addition, during his speech for the celebration of the 76th Independence Day, PM Modi explained what is necessary to fulfill these plans:
“In the coming 25 years, we have to focus on five promises. First, to move forward with bigger resolves and a resolve of developed India; second, erase all traces of slavery in our minds and habits; third, be proud of our legacy; fourth, focus on unity; and fifth, fulfil the duties of citizens, which should be done by the prime minister and chief ministers as well.”

On India's Tech Achievements

On September 16, the SCO summit was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during which the prime minister drew the world’s attention to the economic growth and technological development of India:
“We are supporting innovation in every sector. Today, there are more than 70,000 start-ups in our country, including over 100 unicorns. Our people-centric development model is also paying attention on technological efficiency.”
PM Narendra Modi often gives speeches to the nation during his monthly radio program “Mann Ki Baat”. Speaking on Indian achievements on November 27, he lauded the launch of the Vikram-S rocket which is the first built by India's private sector:

“On November 18, India achieved a feat in the space sector when a rocket Vikram-S was launched into space. It was designed and developed by the private sector and marks a new era for it.”

On India's G20 Presidency

While speaking on international relations on November 27, the prime minister also shared his opinion on the G20 presidency, which India formally assumed on December 1.

“People from across the country have written to me about how proud they are that India has got the G20 presidency. It is a huge opportunity for us. We have to focus on global good, be it peace, unity or sustainable development. India has the solution to these challenges. Our theme is 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'.”

On India's Relations With Other Nations

PM Modi also gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the Defence Expo 2022 on October 19. He underlined the fact that the world appreciates and respects India:
“Today the role of the merchant navy has also increased in the era of globalization. The world's expectations from India have increased. I assure that India has to fulfill them. Therefore, this Defence Expo is also a symbol of global trust towards India."
Addressing the SCO summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan on September 16, PM Modi also expressed his opinion on Indian ties with SCO countries:
“India supports mutual trust and cooperation among SCO countries. We need to invest in better connectivity while also giving rights of transit to each other. SCO should try to create resilient supply chain in our region.”

On Indo-Russian Ties

Following the SCO summit in Samarkand, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with the President of Russia Vladimir Putin on September 16, 2022, during which he placed the emphasis on India-Russian friendship:

“The relationship between India and Russia has deepened manifold. We are friends who have been together for many decades and the whole world knows how India’s relationship with Russia has been and therefore the world also knows that it is an unbreakable friendship.”

On September 7 during an online address through video conferencing to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, PM Modi explained in what way India and Russia want to develop their cooperation:
“India wants to strengthen its partnership with Russia on Arctic issues and to increase cooperation in the field of energy. Along with it, India has also made significant investments in the Russian Far East in the areas of pharma and diamonds.”

On the Ukraine Crisis

India's position on the Ukraine crisis has been balanced but at the same time neutral: India advocates for dialogue between the parties but maintains that Delhi could not be involved in the negotiations -- since it is not party to the conflict.
In 2022, PM Modi commented on the issue while addressing the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia:
“From the very beginning of the Ukraine conflict, we have emphasized the need to adopt the path of diplomacy and dialogue. We support all peaceful efforts to end this conflict.”
