More than 650 cases of acid attacks were reported in India between 2018 and 2020, media reports quoting Crime in India data suggest.
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Wednesday took cognizance of an acid attack against a 17-year-old schoolgirl in the Dwarka area of Delhi.
As per media reports, two men on a motorbike threw acid on the teen at around 7:30 a.m. (IST) on Wednesday.
The girl was hospitalized with serious face injuries as a result of the attack. Her father says the girl's condition is critical as of now.
"My daughters, one aged 17 and the other aged 13, were out together this morning. Suddenly, two men on a bike threw acid at my elder daughter and drove away. They had their faces covered," the father told media.
Condemning the incident, DCW chief Maliwal said in a tweet in Hindi: “Two miscreants throw acid on a schoolgirl in broad daylight in country’s capital and leave. Is anyone afraid of the law? Why is acid not banned? SHAME.”
Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi, Maliwal also added that the DCW had issued a notice to the Delhi police to arrest the miscreants, proposing the strictest punishment for them.
The official also raised questions over the retail sale of acid in the country.

Sharing an earlier tweet regarding the access to acid in Delhi, Maliwal noted that the substance is as easy to buy “as vegetables are,” wondering why the local authorities are hesitating to completely ban the sale of it.

Delhi state chief Arvind Kejriwal reacted to the incident, vowing that the city authorities would not tolerate this kind of crime and promising to punish the culprits in the most serious way possible.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police have already detained both suspects in connection with the incident.
