Delhi Women's Commission Urges Parliament to Urgently Discuss Female Security
The call came on the anniversary of the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case in the Munirka area of India's capital. The case sparked widespread protests across the country.
Delhi's Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal has urged parliament to suspend other business and discuss female security on Thursday.
On the tenth anniversary of the infamous Nirbhaya gang rape and murder on Friday, Maliwal requested that a discussion be held by the heads of the lower and upper houses -- Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, respectively.
Sharing a copy of the letter on Twitter, Maliwal wrote in Hindi: "It has been ten years since the Nirbhaya gang rape case. However, nothing has changed until now. I am writing a letter to the respected Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman requesting the suspension of the parliamentary session today and the holding of talks on the topic of women's safety in parliament."
Maliwal’s letter to Birla and Dhankar also mentioned the recent acid attack on 17-year-old school girl in Delhi's Dwarka area.
“The problem of increasing crimes against women and girls has reached an epidemic proportion and governments are failing to take concrete steps to counter it. Even the Nirbhaya Fund that was set up for providing relief and rehabilitation for women and girls has been reduced substantially. Governments have failed to create deterrence in the minds of people against crimes against women and girls,” the DCW chief wrote in her letter.
On December 16, 2012, six men raped and caused grievous injuries to a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in Delhi. The heinous crime triggered widespread outrage across the country.
Delhi Police arrested all the accused. The main suspect – Ram Singh – allegedly committed suicide in jail. Another suspect was a juvenile and was let off after serving three years in a reform facility. The remaining four – Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma – were finally hanged in March 2020 following a long legal tussle.
