Protests broke out in Jammu and Kashmir region’s Rajouri district on Friday after the bodies of two civilians were found near an Indian military base.Identified as Kamal Kumar and Sunrinder Kumar, both were residents of the district and operated an army canteen. A third person, who was also found shot, is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. He hails from Uttarakhand state.The three were found on the Rajouri-Poonch National Highway that separates the Indian army base and a camp housing paramilitary trooper of Central Reserve Armed Forces. According to the military, they were killed by unidentified militants, who fired upon them. Local residents, however, blamed the army, blocking the main highway of the region. Soon, they started pelting stones and setting vehicles' tyres on fire to protest the incident. Jitendar Singh, a locally elected representative from Muradpur Village, has demanded monetary compensation for the deceased’s families.Police failed to pacify the protesters, who were joined by the victims' families. Deputy Inspector General in the J&K police, Haseeb Mughal, said the police have filed a first information report (F.I.R.) and there will be a “thorough probe”. “We assure that there will be a fair probe in the matter,” Mughal said. Senior politicians from the region also touched on the issue and sought a probe into the matter.Former State Chief Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet demanded that an impartial probe be carried out to “ensure that culprits are punished, and justice is served.”Former member of J&K legislative assembly from the Communist Part of India (Marxist) MY Tarigami also demanded a credible probe into "the unfortunate incident to bring the culprits to book”.

Protests broke out in Jammu and Kashmir region’s Rajouri district on Friday after the bodies of two civilians were found near an Indian military base.
Identified as Kamal Kumar and Sunrinder Kumar, both were residents of the district and operated an army canteen. A third person, who was also found shot, is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. He hails from Uttarakhand state.
The three were found on the Rajouri-Poonch National Highway that separates the Indian army base and a camp housing paramilitary trooper of Central Reserve Armed Forces.
According to the military, they were killed by unidentified militants, who fired upon them.
The 16 Corps, Indian Army, White Knight Corps, weird: “In an early morning firing incident by unidentified terrorists at Rajauri near Military Hospital, there has been fatal casualty of two individuals. The police, security forces and civil administration officials at on the site.”
Local residents, however, blamed the army, blocking the main highway of the region. Soon, they started pelting stones and setting vehicles' tyres on fire to protest the incident.
Jitendar Singh, a locally elected representative from Muradpur Village, has demanded monetary compensation for the deceased’s families.
“The families of these victims should be compensated and each of the victims should be provided relief of five million rupees (approx. $60,000). Their next kin should be provided with a job to support their families. We will continue to protest unless these demands are met,” Kumar told local reporters at the protest site.
