Rahul Gandhi claimed on Friday that Indian troops were “thrashed” by PLA during the skirmish between the two sides in Arunachal Pradesh on December 9.
India’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has slammed Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Rahul Gandhi for “insulting the valor” of the Indian forces.
Addressing a press conference in Jaipur on Friday, Gandhi criticized the Indian media for not posing questions about the Sino-India border dispute to the government. "...they will not ask a single question about China capturing 2,000 square kilometers of Indian territory (since BJP came to power in 2014), killing 20 Indian soldiers (during the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020), and thrashing our soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh," the opposition MP remarked.
A BJP spokesperson told a press conference at the party headquarters in New Delhi that Gandhi’s remarks risked “damaging the morale” of the Indian troops as they were “confronting the challenge” from Chinese troops at the border.

“Indian troops are brave enough. They have never been thrashed and will never be thrashed by any other force,” Gaurav Bhatia remarked.

The BJP spokesperson said that Indian Army is among the “bravest” in the world and New Delhi also possessed the “diplomatic capability” to confront any challenge.
Bhatia also called upon Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge to expel Gandhi from the party over what has been viewed as derogatory remarks against the Army.
“If the opposition really stands with the country and the armed forces, then Rahul Gandhi should be expelled from the party for belittling the Indian troops and trying to break the morale of the forces,” Bhatia remarked.
Gandhi’s remarks have also been condemned by federal law and justice minister Kiren Rijiju, who said that he has become a “huge embarrassment for the country.”
Indian and Chinese troops last week clashed in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh located at the eastern section of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de-facto yet disputed border of the two nations.

India, China Praised for Quick Disengagement After Tawang Border Clashes
The skirmish was the first between the two armies since August 2020, when troops from both the sides clashed in the eastern Ladakh region.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh told the Indian parliament this week that the PLA troops “tried to unilaterally change the status quo” in Yangste area of the Tawang sector but were “bravely stopped” by Indian soldiers.
Singh said that the ensuing skirmish led to injuries on both sides. He further said that a “flag meeting” was held between the two sides on 11 December, two days after the clashes, to resolve the differences as per the established mechanisms between the two countries.
Meanwhile, PLA spokesperson for Western Theater Command, Colonel Long Shaohua, has accused the Indian troops of “illegally crossing the LAC,” which led to the clashes.
“The Chinese troops made professional, normative and resolute response, bringing on-site situation under control. Up to now, the Chinese and Indian troops have disengaged,” Long said in a statement.
Beijing has said that the situation at the Sino-India border is “generally stable” and that both the sides have “maintained smooth communication” to resolve the differences through diplomatic and military channels.
