The Indian state of Goa was freed from Portuguese rule in 1961. Since then, the state has observed December 19 as “Goa Liberation Day.”
Goa state chief Pramod Sawant on Monday said that the coastal state is steadily inching closer towards the dream of a "Golden Goa."
Extending his greetings to the people of Goa on the occasion of Goa Liberation Day, Sawant paid tribute to Indian freedom fighters for the sacrifices they made in liberating the state from the Portuguese.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and several federal ministers along with other politicians also greeted the natives on Goa Liberation Day.
Prime Minister Modi in a tweet said “we recall the courage and monumental contribution of all those who were a part of the movement to free Goa”.

Delhi state chief and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal said in his commemoration message that “if we actually want to pay tribute to those who liberated Goa, we must free the state from corruption & unemployment, and protect its legacy, environment & culture.”
The Portuguese refused to leave Goa even after India gained independence from British rule in 1947. The then-Indian government preferred diplomatic talks over military action. But the efforts proved futile.
Finally, following 36-hour military action named “Operation Vijay” ("Operation Victory") launched on December 18, 1961, the Indian Army liberated Goa after around 450 years of Portuguese rule.
