In response to escalating border tensions with China's People's Liberation Army, India has been reallocating its military resources in an effort to address the situation.
India’s apex defense procurement body, the Defense Acquisition Council, on Thursday approved 24 much-awaited capital acquisition proposals worth about $10.18 billion.
The proposals, which include six for Indian Army, six for the Indian Air Force, 10 for the Indian Navy, and two proposals for the Indian Coast Guard, will largely be procured from domestic sources, with 21 proposals worth about $10 billion being sourced domestically.

“Acceptance of Necessities (AoNs) accorded will equip the Indian Army with platforms and equipment such as Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles, Light Tanks and Mounted Gun Systems providing a quantum jump to Indian Army’s operational preparedness,” Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who chaired the meeting, said.

An AoN is the first stage in a procurement process that allows forces to go ahead with a project.
The approved proposals also include procurement of ballistic helmets and with enhanced protection level for soldiers, he underlined.
Light tanks are meant for high-altitude warfare in regions such as Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh and they can rapidly be deployed after being transported by air. The first light tank prototype could be rolled out by mid-2023.
The Indian Navy, which has been facing competition from China in the Indian Ocean region, will receive naval anti-ship missiles, multi-purpose vessels, and high-endurance autonomous vehicles. These assets will further enhance maritime strength giving a boost to the Indian Navy’s capabilities, the defense minister said.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) will strengthen its capabilities with the induction of new missile systems, long-range guided bombs, range augmentation kits for conventional bombs, and advanced surveillance systems.
These additions will enhance the IAF's lethal capabilities and help it to better protect India's airspace.
The specific details of these new systems and their capabilities were not mentioned in the given information.
