India has reported four new cases of Omicron subvariant BF.7, which is driving the COVID-19 surge in China and other parts of the world.
Indian Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said that authorities will re-introduce necessary restrictions to check the spread of COVID-19 from Thursday.
“Yes, we will start introducing the (certain) restrictions across the country from Thursday,” Mandaviya told Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar on Thursday.

Speraking at the parliament later, Mandaviya said that all the state governments had been advised by the federal health ministry to regularly monitor the evolving epidemiological situation in different parts of the country and to issue safety guidlines prescribing the use of mask in public places, maintaining social distance and other "COVID-appropriate behaviour."

The state governments were also urged to enforce COVID protocols ahead of anticipated large gatherings at upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.

India to Test 2% of International Passenger Arrivals

The health minister also revealed on Thuesday that two percent of arrivals at the international airports across the country will have to undergo RT-PCR tests starting Thursday.
New Delhi re-started testing international passenger arrivals on Wednesday only about a month after the government scrapped a provision that required international passenger arrivals to submit a negative RT-PCR report before being allowed to enter the country.
The health minister also noted in his address that COVID-19 fatalities in countries such as Japan, South Korea, the US, France, Greece and Italy were witnessing a steady rise in recent weeks.

Even as a number of countries globally were witnessing a surge in cases, India’s daily average of COVID caseload stood at 153, while the global caseload average stood at 587,000, the minister noted, giving credit to the “impressive vaccination rate” in the country.

Around 90% of eligible Indian population has been administered both the doses, while 22 percent of them have also received the precautionary dose as of now, he said.
The Health Minister said that the states have been advised to advertise the benefits of precautionary dose to the public amid the nationwide alert triggered by the reported spurt of COVID cases in China and other parts of the world.
