New Delhi is currently embroiled in territorial disputes with both of its biggest neighbors – China and Pakistan.
Indian Air Force chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari says New Delhi should forge partnerships with likeminded nations to counter "volatile and uncertain" neighboring nations.
“Our neighbor continues to remain volatile and uncertain. Amidst this volatility, we must enhance our collective strengths by partnering with nations, which share common beliefs and values,” Chaudhari underlined during a keynote address at the 19th Subroto Mukherjee Seminar at New Delhi-based think tank the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS).
In this regard, India should take advantage of its image as a “stable country with economic heft to mutually beneficial relationships and strategic partnerships.

“[It is] essential that we retain our strategic autonomy and for that [the] strategy of balancing as espoused by John Mearsheimer could be [a] way forward,” Chaudhari stated, citing the a renowned American scholar who is currently a professor at the University of Chicago.

Dwelling on the ongoing US-China geo-strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region, Chaudhari stated that an “established superpower” is being challenged by an “established regional power with global ambitions.”
He further noted that the US-China rivalry will have “repercussions” for the other regional countries, including India.

On an international level, Chaudhari noted, there will always be an “overlap” between competition and cooperation in the existing world order, where national interests dictate the actions of countries.

“A healthy competition has the potential for meaningful cooperation,” he reckoned.

IAF Chief Lauds India’s Decision to Buy Russian Crude

Chaudhari stated that India must develop its own strategy to “survive and thrive” in the ongoing geopolitical rivalry and shouldn’t lose sight of its “long-term objectives.”

The IAF chief further noted that India’s balanced position in pursuit of its national interests has been reflected in its decision to procure oil at best prices in spite of “pressure from various quarters.”

The reference is to India stepping up its crude imports from its “time-tested friend” Russia, which has emerged as New Delhi’s biggest supplier of oil in recent months.
New Delhi has rebuffed calls from the US and other Western nations to cut down on its commercial and energy ties with Moscow.
India maintains that procuring Russian crude is in New Delhi’s “national interest” amid global volatility in crude prices in the wake of efforts by Western nations to phase out Russian commodities from the global supply chain over Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine.
