Six to seven foot long plastic bags can be filled with 3-4 kg of storage gas in an hour, enough to last one to two days. However, they are unsafe for use.
A video from Pakistan that is going viral on social media shows some people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province carrying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in a plastic bag - as appalling as it may sound.
While gas cylinders may cost around 10,000 Pakistani Rupees ($45), with plastic bags, the cost is reduced up to 70-80 percent. Many local media reports suggest that using plastic bags for gas storage became a common thing many years ago - despite jeopardizing people's lives and property.
In December, officials in Peshawar city arrested 16 shopkeepers for selling such bags.
This novel use of plastic bags emerged reportedly amid the shortage of gas, and the provision of petroleum products at higher rates stoked inflation.
As per the media reports, the Karak district of the province has not been provided gas connections since 2007, and the city of Hangu has been deprived of gas connections for two years.
Local media also suggest that people in the area can't afford gas from the government since they see it as too expensive. Meanwhile, the cost of natural gas has been skyrocketing in the country over the past year, as Pakistan has a limited gas supply.
