Oscars 2023: Top Indian Movies Listed for Nominations

The 95th Academy Awards (Oscars) are scheduled to be held on March 12 at Los Angeles' Dolly Theatre. They will announce the final nominations on January 24.
Indian filmmakers are pinning high hopes on the Oscars 2023 after several movies made it to the list of eligible films for the Academy Award nominations.
A total of 301 feature films from across the world have been shortlisted to officially compete in various categories.
Here are the Bollywood movies that have made it to the cut-off list and are a step closer to getting nominated at the Oscars 2023.

RRR

Pan-India movie RRR's 'Naatu Naatu' song, composed by M.M. Keeravaani and penned by Kala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj, has become the first Indian song shortlisted for the Academy Awards.
The movie, which was released in March last year and minted around US $175 million (INR 1.2 billion) at the global box office, has been shortlisted for Oscar 2023 nominations.
Starring actors N.T. Rama Rao Jr. (also known as NTR), Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, and actress Alia Bhatt, the movie is a pre-independence fictional story woven around two real-life Indian revolutionaries in the 1920s.
Previously, RRR also got nominated for the Golden Globe Awards 2023 for Best Picture - Non-English Language and Original Song - Motion Picture.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

An adaptation of the crime novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai by author Hussain Zaidi, the Bollywood movie is loosely based on the real-life story of a Mumbai-based brothel owner Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Starring Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt in the lead role, the movie showcases how a simple girl, Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi from Gujarat, ended up becoming famous as a brothel owner and fighting for the right of prostitutes.
Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movie premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival last year and turned out to be the fifth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022.
The movie has once again come into the limelight after getting qualified to get nominated for Oscar 2023.

The Kashmir Files

One of the most talked about Bollywood movies, The Kashmir Files brings to celluloid the horrific real incident of the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Kashmir valley in the 1990s.
Back then, around 62,000 Kashmiri Pandit families from India's Jammu and Kashmir were forced to flee their homes and hundreds of thousands were killed amid escalating violence against Hindus.
The third highest-grossing Hindi film of 2020 will now run in the race for Oscar 2023 nominations after it was listed.
Starring actors Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumaar, and actress Pallavi Joshi, The Kashmir Files garnered US$43 million worldwide.

Kantara

The Indian Kannada-language action thriller film Kantara, which revolves around the universal theme of conflict between nature and human beings, has been qualified to get nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor in the Oscars 2023.
Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, the movie showcases the strife between forest officers and the inhabitants of the forest against hunting.
The second highest-grossing Kannada film of all time, the blockbuster movie minted INR 4 billion at the box office worldwide last year.

Iravin Nizhal

After entering the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records for being the first Asian non-linear single-shot film, the Indian Tamil-language independent thriller Iravin Nizhal has made its space in the list of movies qualified for the nominations of Oscar 2023.
Written, and directed by R. Parthiban, the film revolves around Nandhu, a 50-year-old financier, who looks back at his life and reflects on his time from infancy to middle age.

Chhello Show

Directed by Pan Nalin, Chhello Show (Last Film Show) has been shortlisted for Best International feature film at the Oscars 2023.
The movie is the coming-of-age story of a young boy's love affair with the cinema in a village of Saurashtra.

All That Breathes

Shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature Film category at the Oscars 2023, All That Breathes is about two siblings from Delhi who devoted their lives to rescue and treat injured birds, especially black kites.
Directed by Shaunak Sen, the documentary previously won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival last year and Golden Eye award for the best documentary at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The Elephant Whisperers

Director Kartiki Gonsalves' documentary The Elephant Whisperers has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Short Film at the Oscars 2023.
The documentary for Netflix depicts an unbreakable bond between two abandoned elephants and their caretakers.

Me Vasantrao

Indian Marathi language film Me Vasantrao is a biographical film based on the life of the Indian classical musician Vasantrao Deshpande who shot to fame for his contribution towards Natya Sangeet.
Starring actor Rahul Deshpande, Vasantrao Deshpande's grandson, the movie showcases his contribution towards Natya Sangeet (musical drama).

Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi

Another Marathi language film, Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi is based on a love triangle that focuses on the social cause of organ donation.
Directed by Dr. Sanjay Madhavrao Gaikwad, the drama stars Sanjay Madhavrao Gaikwad and Karmanya Sanjay Mukhedkar.

Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

Indian biographical drama Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is based on the life of Nambi Narayanan a scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation who was accused in the ISRO espionage case and later exonerated.
Shortlisted for Oscar 2023 nominations, the movie, starring R. Madhavan in the lead role, premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival and ended up garnering INR 500 million at the box office worldwide.

Vikrant Rona

Actor Kichcha Sudeepa's Kannada language movie revolves around Inspector Vikrant Rona, who arrives at a remote village in the middle of a tropical rainforest where he starts witnessing a series of unexplainable events which are attributed to the supernatural.
The film became the third highest-grossing Kannada film at the time of its release.
After getting shortlisted for Oscar 2023 nominations, the movie has again come into the spotlight.

Jungle Cry

In 2007, 12 tribal underprivileged children from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences in India's Odhisha state picked up rugby and within four months won laurels for India by lifting the under-14 Rugby International Junior Rugby Tournament held in London.
This was all thanks to the rugby coach Rudraksh Jena of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) who started a team and trained the children for the tournament.
This inspiring sports drama story was brought to celluloid by filmmaker Sagar Ballary and featured Bollywood actor Abhay Deol in the lead role of coach.

The Next Morning

The Next Morning starring actors Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Chand Halder and revolves around three young orphans who leverage a situation to turn themselves into criminals and finally find solace to justify the past.
