This will be the first time in Pakistani politics when anyone has contested 33 seats in national assembly by-elections.
The party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced that its chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan will contest all the 33 seats in the forthcoming National Assembly by-elections slated for 16 March.
"Imran Khan will be PTI's candidate for all constituencies that [are up for grabs] and our [ex-]MNAs, who were earlier elected for those seats, will be covering candidates," senior PTI politician Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Sunday.
Last week, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced dates for the by-elections.
Most of these seats were vacated after PTI parliamentarians resigned collectively in April after Khan was ousted as prime minister. At that time, only 11 resignations were accepted. Later, as the Speaker began accepting resignations in July, he received 113 more, including the 33.
In October last year, the former prime minister - now the opposition leader - Khan also set a record when he won six National Assembly seats for the PTI in a by-election.
Pakistan's ruling government is at present under criticism from the masses as inflation is at a record high.
