Polls Reveal No Dent to Modi’s Popularity Despite Adani Controversy: Report
18:44 10.02.2023 (Updated: 18:46 10.02.2023) A report by the research firm Hindenburg caused a massive loss to Indian businessman Gautam Adani, ousting him from the list of world's top 10 richest men and even costing him his "Asia’s richest man" title.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity has not been affected, a foreign media report said on Friday, citing a poll which has come at at time when a controversy over Indian conglomerate Adani group is being consistently raised by the Congress-led opposition.
According to the media report, a survey conducted by Indian international polling agency C-Voter showed that support for Prime Minister Modi has not declined.
The survey, however, did not mention the controversy revolving around the Adani group.
The report further states that almost half of the people, who participated in the survey till February 5, were “very much satisfied” with the work of Indian Prime Minister while 30 percent were “satisfied to some extent”.
The data also showed that the popularity level of Modi has remained the same since November 2022.
Another survey titled "Mood of the Nation", conducted by C-Voter in January for an Indian media outlet showed that 72 percent of people rated Prime Minister’s performance as “good” which was up by six percent compared to the survey conducted in August last year.
What is the Adani Row All About?
Modi has come under sharp criticism from the opposition parties since a Hindenburg report accused Adani group of maintaining offshore tax havens, stock price manipulation and accounting fraud.
The main opposition party has questioned Prime Minister Modi over his proximity to Adani.
Since the report was published on January 24, the opposition parties have disrupted parliament proceedings three times in the last week. They even staged a protest seeking a probe against the group.
They have alleged that the Modi government is shielding Adani by refusing to grant the demand for a bipartisan investigation.
Dismissing all charges, Modi recently asserted in the parliament that the Congress-led opposition can’t destroy his image with lies and abuses as blessings of 1.4 billion people in the country remain his protective cover.
