Officials Misheard: Shashi Tharoor Theorizes About Why 'Cow Hug Day' Was Scrapped

Earlier this week, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) urged people to celebrate February 14th as Cow Hug Day. However, on Friday, the suggestion was withdrawn, leaving people confused about the whole thing.
Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor, known for his witty humor on Twitter, has hit back at the government for backpedaling on its Cow Hug Day proposal.
In a humorous Tweet, Tharoor said that the government must have passed an order saying "let them hug their guy" on Valentine's Day, however, it got misheard as 'gaay' (which means 'cow' in Hindi), so the authorities issued and then cancelled the puzzling document.
The odd directive was published by the AWBI on 6 February, urging fans of bovines to celebrate not just Valentine's Day, but mark it as Cow Hug Day for 'emotional richness.'
"Therefore, all the cow lovers may also celebrate 14 February as Cow Hug Day, keeping in mind the importance of mother cow and making life happy and full of positive energy (sic)," the appeal read.
This appeal prompted countless jokes from netizens, including opposition party members.
Cows are sacred to millions of Hindus, who view them with reverence. In many Indian states, their slaughter is prohibited. Ever since the BJP government gained power of the national government, it has allocated a separate budget for the health and welfare of cows.
